Instincts - Sarah Marquis

Cover:

Cover:
Schlicht, aber mehr braucht man auch nicht :)

Zusammenfassung:

The Interpretation of Dreams 1st appeared in German in 11/1899 as Die Traumdeutung (publisher postdated 1900). Publication inaugurated the theory of Freudian dream analysis, which he described as "the royal road to the understanding of unconscious mental processes", promising to "demonstrate that there is a psychological technique which makes it possible to interpret dreams, & that on the application of this technique, every dream will reveal itself as a psychological structure, full of significance, & one which may be assigned to a specific place in the psychic activities of the waking state. Further, I shall endeavour to elucidate the processes which underlie the strangeness & obscurity of dreams, & to deduce from these processes the nature of the psychic forces whose conflict or cooperation is responsible for our dreams."
The book introduces the ego & describes a theory of the unconscious as regards dream interpretation. Dreams are forms of wish-fulfillment—attempts by the unconscious to resolve conflicts, whether recent or from the past (Beyond the Pleasure Principle discusses dreams which don't appear to be such). Because the information in the unconscious is in an unruly, often disturbing form, a preconscious censor won't allow it to pass unaltered to consciousness. While still attentive, the censor is more lax in sleep than in waking hours. Thus the unconscious must distort the meaning of its information to make it past the censor. As such, dream images often aren't what they appear to be & need analysis.

Meine Meinung:

Dare to remember - Susanna Beard

Cover:
Beautiful <3

Synopsis:
Reeling from a brutal attack that leaves her badly injured and her roommate dead, Lisa Fulbrook flees to the countryside to recuperate. With only vague memories of the event, she isolates herself from her friends and family, content to spend her days wandering the hills with her dog, Riley. However, Lisa is soon plagued, not only by vivid flashbacks, but questions, too: how did their assailant know them? Why were they attacked? And what really happened that night? As she desperately tries to piece together the memories, Lisa realizes that there’s another truth still hidden to her, a truth she can’t escape from. A truth that may have been right in front of her all along.

My thoughts and opinion:
Wow. That books started powerful and it remained like it as well. I can highly recommend it!

Ali and Lisa are best friends and room mates. One day they were attacked and Lisa wakes up at the hospital - not remembering what happened. Ali is dead, Lisa was badly injured and no one can help her regain her memory.

She moves far away and slowly, thanks to the help of different friends and events her memory slowly comes back ... and it's worse than expected.

Sworn to transfer - Terah Edun

Cover:
As beautiful as the rest of the trilogy <3

Synopsis:
Eighteen-year-old companion trainee Ciardis Weathervane has won the friendship of the royal heir and saved his claim to the throne. Yet her interference in the inheritance rights leaves more harm done than good. The Ameles Forest lies unprotected and its inhabitants are dying.

As humans begin to die in gruesome deaths, the Emperor dispatches the royal heir to the forests with the solution to the kith concerns.

With enemies closing ranks in Sandrin, Ciardis can little afford to leave the city’s nest of vipers to take on a new task. But she’s given no choice when her loyalty to the crown and courts are called into question.

To keep the Companions’ Guild happy and the favor of the Imperial Court, Ciardis will be tested in frightening new ways, especially when she’s faced with an obstacle that could risk the lives of her friends and the family she never thought she had.

My thoughts and opinion:

It took me a while to get into this to be honest. It's been a while since I read the first book but after a few pages I loved the story again.

Ciardis and Prince Sebastian are still together. Ciardis is a companion trainee and people want both of them dead ... they killed someone (can't tell you who if you haven't read the first book) and some want revenge for it.

Then it's a crazy ride between lies, dragons and wendigos. Stuff that I never thought would be compiled into ONE book.

If you love fantasy with a strong female, I can highly recommend these books :)

Der steinerne Engel - Carol O'Connell

Cover:
Ich mag es :)

Zusammenfassung:

At the end of Killing Critics, the third book in Carol O'Connell's addictive series about Mallory, a strikingly original New York City cop, Mallory is traveling south on a train. "She carried no stitch of formal identification that would tie her to a name or a place. This was the way she had come to New York as a child, with only her wits and a bit of a mother's blood on her hands ..." Stone Angel shows us both the beginning and end of that journey, solving mysteries set up in O'Connell's first two books in the series--Mallory's Oracle and The Man Who Cast Two Shadows--as well as raising the inevitable question of what she can do for an encore. Even if the Mallory books end here, O'Connell's future seems secure: these dark and powerful myths are sure to be read and reread for a long time.

Meine Meinung:

How not to Die - Dr. Michael Greger

Cover:
Fits the title perfectly!

Synopsis:

The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America -- heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more -- and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives.

The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The fifteen leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn't have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger's advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer.

History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet whenever you can. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug-and without the side effects. Fighting off liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (the number 1 killer in the United States)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to prevent the disease but often stop it in its tracks.

My thoughts and opinion:

Well it's actually quite informative but then again SO repetitive. For every cause (lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer) the answer is: GREENS. Dude, you wrote a 545 pages thick book and it all comes down to one conclusion: eat your beans, salads, veggies and fruits people. Wow.

Tintenblut - Cornelia Funke

Cover:
Passt perfekt zum Buch! :)
